Fullersburg Woods trail temporarily closed for repaving

A 300-foot section of trail at Fullersburg Woods will be closed for a few days in late April/early May so that the crushed limestone surface can be replaced with asphalt.

The project, which is expected to cost about $20,000, is being done because that area of the trail has been prone to flooding, said Jeff Redick, District 2 board member for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

“When we have major rain events and experience flooding over Spring Road, we get washouts on that area of the trail,” Redick said. “The asphalt should work much better when there is a heavy rain, and if all goes well, I hope people on the trail notice nothing when the work is done.”

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin April 30 and take about three days, Redick said. The trail will be closed during the work and possibly for an additional day when work is completed.

For the work to be completed, the water level of Salt Creek near the trail will be temporarily lowered.

“The proximity of the trail makes that necessary for the ground work there,” Redick said, noting that the water level is lowered by opening a pipe.

“It takes 4 to 5 hours to get the water level below the dam and not as long to fill up again when we close the pipe,” he said.

Redick said the work was scheduled as to not conflict with any scheduled programs at Fullersburg Woods.

Located at 3609 York Road, Fullersburg Woods is open daily from one hour after sunrise until one hour after sunset. The nature education center at Fullersburg Woods is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through October, with some exceptions on holidays.

April programs at Fullersburg Woods include Native Landscaping: For Birds, Bees and You at 1 p.m. April 15; Native Landscaping: All About Plants, at 1 p.m. April 22; The Natural World Book Club at 6 p.m. April 24; Wildflower Walk at 10 a.m. April 25; and Native Landscaping: Design at 6 p.m. April 25.
